Are viruses a problem in grape growing?Yes, viruses can be a significant concern in grape growing. Certain viruses such as Grapevine Leafroll and Red Blotch can affect vine health, reducing yield, fruit quality, and overall vineyard productivity. However, at Amberg Grapevines, we take every precaution to provide virus-free plant material.

Why are roots left long?We leave the roots long to give your grapevines the best possible start. Longer roots allow the plant to establish itself more quickly and access deeper water and nutrients in the soil. This promotes healthier growth and improves the vine’s resilience during its first few years in the vineyard. When you receive your vines, simply trim the roots to suit your planting needs!

What is a certified vine?New York's program ensures nurseries use virus-tested, clean plant material from trusted sources. Nurseries start with the cleanest possible budwood and rootstock, certified by the National Clean Plant Network (NCPN). This material is grown in our mother blocks and regularly tested to ensure it's virus-free. Over four years, 100% of the vines in these blocks are tested, with samples sent to Cornell University for analysis.
